June 19 and 20

This morning, we had a class by Geraldine Sarthou about the biogeochemical cycle of iron and its role in the biological pump of carbon in the ocean. After lunch, the watch began for us, but students of the 0-4 watch took a break in order to join the others to listen to Wolfgang KUHNT. He spoke about tracking Indonesian throughflow variability over the last 450 kyrs.
In the evening, a bunch of little sharks were swimming on starboard side.

This morning, somebody on the crew injured his finger, so we stopped coring and made for the nearest coast in order to unload him.
The class of today was presented by JIAN Zhimin and concerned the Sino-French cooperation in deep-sea geology and paleoceanography. We had another class in the afternoon with Ann Holbourn, titled « Stepping Into the ‘Ice House’ : Impacts of Orbital Forcing and Atmospheric CO2 on Miocene Ice-Sheet Expansion ».
Yesterday, we chose the topics of our posters. Each student’s shift must make two posters ; one on a theoretical topic and one on a technical topic. Today, we are beginning their realization.
For a few hours, we have been near a coast and, despite cloudy weather, we are looking at a big volcano in low activity.

Now, we have to leave you, because Carlo LAJ (Cruise Chief), Geraldine SARTHOU, and Bruno MALAIZÉ (heads of the University of the Sea) are offering us a drink.
