Résumé
Learning about our future climate and weather is important for planning and adaptation. For the short-term we have the daily weather reports, while for long-term changes of the climate the IPCC reports are well known. But it is the time-frame in between, from a few weeks to a few decades, which for many applications and planning processes are decisive.
In this area, seasonal to decadal climate predictions (S2D) are an important tool, which showed multiple successes over the past years. This talk will generally explain the concepts of S2D and why it is at all possible to predict the future of the climate system for more than a few days in advance. Examples will focus on the North Atlantic and its effects onto the European continent.
