Studies in the fields
of biological evolution and biodiversity are generally concerned with events at
local, regional or interregional levels.
The originality of this later work is that it concerns the
global scale and considers the interactions between global regulation and local
evolutionary changes. It shows in
particular that the global ontogenesis of a planetary system corresponds to an
interaction between strongly stochastic processes (local Darwinian selection)
and a powerful determinism in the short term dynamics of populations developing
from local forms. Such determinism,
demonstrated here by computer modelling, provides the global system with
structure and stability. This is not
however visible in reality because of the constant intervention of stochastic
disturbances, either abiotic or resulting from biological evolution, causing
the global system to pursue its evolutionary pathway.
These
results open up interesting perspectives, not only for understanding the
long-term evolutionary history of the Earth, but also for understanding its regulatory
capacity in the face of internal and external hazards affecting more short term
biodiversity.
